The shoes

The plaited rope around the soles on these Gucci GG Blooms Espadrille loafers had torn, leaving the loose threads at risk of further damage. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis / quote, we offered to repair the stitching by hand.

Stitching repair

We started off by cutting the loose esparto rope and then carefully threading a new rope into place around the affected area, using the original holes and following the original pattern. Having tightened the thread to an appropriate degree, we then tied the ends of the rope together and reinforced the joins to prevent them from coming apart again.

The espadrille stitching tends to weaken with wear, but especially so when the rubber soles at the base of the shoes are worn — in which case, the stitching starts rubbing into the ground, causing it to be pulled on and eventually torn. So we recommend ensuring that the soles are never too worn, and always have at least a few millimetres of rubber separating (and therefore, protecting) the stitching from the ground.
