The shoes
These Berluti suede loafers were brand new, and the leather soles were unprotected and prone to accelerated wear and tear. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to install a pair of Triumph brass toe plates to protect the soles where they wear down the fastest.
Toe plate installation
Toe plates are a popular option for owners of premium footwear as they protect the soles where they wear down the quickest (at the toes). In most cases, these premium plates are flush-mounted in the sense that they are installed into small recesses that we create in the soles, in order to allow the plates to sit flush with the rest of the soles — and so avoid altering the profile of the soles. This also helps to lessen the likelihood of tapping noise arising when the shoes hit the ground during wear.
This involved wetting the leather to soften it and then using a sharp knife to cut out of it a shape based on the shape of the toe plate itself. This is a very delicate process performed by hand to ensure the leather soles are not otherwise damaged and as seamless a finish as possible is achieved. We then used a sharp awl to create holes through which we were then able to securely screw the toe plates into place.
In this case, we used brass Triumph toe plates made in Germany.
