The bag
This Prada Promenade leather satchel bag was structurally in great shape, but as often happens the originally white patent leather had gradually yellowed / stained as a result of everyday wear. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to update the bag by recolouring it to black.
Patent leather colour change
As with any recolouring, we began by thoroughly cleaning the patent leather throughout entire exterior of the bag. This is a key step in the recolouring / refinishing process to achieve a consistent, streak-free colour. We then applied a black leather dye in thin layers, ensuring the leather was fully dry before moving on to the next. Finally, we coated the leather in a sealing agent to ensure the dye was set and the leather’s patent finish remained in tact.
Recolouring patent leathers (like that on this bag) is highly complicated, mainly because of the glossy layer that separates the newly applied dye from the underlying leather. While some bag repair services will simply paint over the dye and finish that paint with a high-gloss finish, we are careful to dye the patent leather itself, and so ensure that the leather’s original patent finish is retained.
