The handbag
Perhaps the world’s most iconic handbag, the Hermès Birkin bag represents the epitome of luxury, and yet few know that it was conceived following a designer’s conversation with a young mother lamenting that could not find a shopping bag large enough to carry her daughter’s bottles. The Birkin bag, measuring 40-cm in length and made from a durable cowhide leather, was designed to carry and survive the contents of a house. However, while the exterior of this particular bag was pretty much in a perfect state, the interior was the opposite — with the interior peeling away and suffering from mould growth.

Lining restoration and mould treatment
The lining was in a such a state that it needed to be fully removed, and so we carefully scraped away all of the existing dark lining, leaving the layer of lighter coloured leather underneath. We then treated the lining to remove all traces of mould and help protect it against mould going forward. We finally recoloured the lighter coloured leather to the original black colour.
