R.M. WILLIAMS RESOLE SERVICES
RM Williams boots are built for utmost durability, primarily because the most wear-prone parts of the boots can be readily replaced. This of course includes the soles on RMs, which have a Goodyear welt (a thin layer of leather between the soles and uppers) into which brand new soles can be stitched as needed.
If you are looking for an RM Williams resole, then you have come to the right place. As official repairers, we offer a comprehensive range of services to get your boots looking fresh — including our RM Williams sole replacement services, in which we use original RM Williams soles and heels as well as premium alternatives. In addition, we repair soles where possible and we enhance the durability of new / lightly worn soles with rubber sole protectors and toe plates.

RM Williams Boot Resoles
An RM Williams boots resole can take a few different forms, depending on how much of the old sole is removed and replaced. A full resole is the default option generally recommended for superior durability, while the half resole is an option for customers interested in an economical solution that works well.
Full Resole
A full resole involves removing the old heels and soles along the entire length of each boot and replacing them with a new pair of heels and full-length soles, which are stitched into place.
Half Resole
A half resole involves slicing off the old soles back to about an inch before the heels and then stitching into place a new pair of half-length soles that sit flush with the rest of the old soles.
RM Williams Boot Sole Types
We perform RM Williams-authorised boot resoles with the manufacturer’s original leather, rubber and combination full-length soles. For customers interested in the benefits offered by alternative soles, we also use half- and full-length leather and rubber soles imported from Italy, France and the United Kingdom.
Related Services
RM Williams Sole Repair
An RM Williams sole repair is an economical option available when soles are only lightly damaged and so do not require complete replacement. For example, if the soles are coming apart, we can re-stitch them into place; if parts of the soles have broken away, we can replace those discrete parts of the soles.
RM Williams Sole Protectors
For enhanced durability and traction, particularly as compared with the original RM Williams leather soles, we can install thin rubber sole protectors covering the relatively wear-prone front half of the boots.
RM Williams Toe Plates
Toe plates made of steel, brass or rubber can be installed on the soles of RM Williams boots for added protection on those parts of the soles that tend to wear down the fastest — the toes. Rubber toe plates are naturally quieter than the metal toe plates, but the metal toe plates can be flush-mounted to avoid affecting the shape of the soles and make little to no noise while you walk.

We also perform various other specialist boot repair services. If you do not see what you are looking for or you are not quite sure what your boots need, learn more about our RM Williams boot repair services or select the ‘Soles’ option while completing our order form — you will then be able to describe and upload photos of your soles, which we will then review and recommend work for.

Frequently Asked Questions
The ideal type of sole on a pair of RM Williams boots depends on the context in which the particular boots will be worn. Generally speaking, rubber soles are best suited to everyday wear, especially in wet or harsher environments.
RM Williams' leather soles offer a classic, elegant aesthetic. Although a new pair of these soles will initially feel stiffer and slipperier, they will gradually wear and adapt to the shape of your feet, eventually offering decent grip and exceptional comfort.
RM Williams' rubber soles are more flexible and instantly comfortable than the leather soles, with the added benefits of greater durability, traction, shock absorption, and resistance to oil and water.
However:
- The rubber soles do not mould to your feet as the leather soles do. So while fresh rubber soles might feel more comfortable than fresh leather soles, this advantage diminishes over time as the leather soles are broken in.
- The rubber soles tend to last much longer than the leather soles — often longer than the leather soles are able to offer superior comfort.
If you are still not quite sure whether to go for leather vs rubber soles, consider getting RM Williams Dynamic Flex (combined leather and rubber) soles or rubber sole protectors to improve durability and traction on new leather soles.
RM Williams boots can continue being resoled so long as the uppers of the boots remain intact.
One of the main pros of RMs is their Goodyear-welted construction. By this, we mean that there exists on the boots a layer of leather between the soles and uppers, from which old soles can be pulled away and into which new soles can be stitched.
RM Williams boots can be readily resoled with a standard boot resole service so long as the welt remains in good shape. If the welt is carelessly stitched through, then the addition of excess stitching holes can irreversibly weaken the welt, eventually causing it to tear. For this reason, we take great care to remove old stitching threads before stitching new soles through the original stitching holes. However, as a last resort in cases where the welt is damaged, we can repair or replace the welt before performing a resole.
The cost to resole RM Williams boots varies widely depending on the actual work performed. Generally speaking, a half resole costs $99, while a full resole costs $179. These standard prices cover the vast majority of RM Williams boot resoles and include free shipping in both directions.
Additional amounts are charged when:
- The soles on RMs are nailed rather than stitched (in these cases, nails will be visible on the outer soles).
- Certain alternative soles are used (e.g. the JR Rendenbach leather or Dainite / Itshide rubber soles).
- Soles protectors or toe plates are installed on the new soles.
- The welt (the layer of leather between the soles and uppers) needs repair before a resole can be performed.
