The boots
The soles on these RM Williams Stockyard boots were worn down and in need of replacement. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to perform a full resole, replacing the soles with a new pair of custom-made rubber soles.
Full resole
Most RM Williams boots are made with a Goodyear welted construction — i.e. there exists between the outer soles and uppers a strip of leather into which new outer soles can be stitched as needed. However, RM Williams’ Stockyard boots are made with moulded soles that are directly bonded to the uppers. This makes replacing the soles on these boots relatively complicated.
The process began with the removal of the worn original soles. We then installed a rand around the bottom of the footbeds — these are strips of leather that help to seal up the gaps that would otherwise exist between the uppers and a pair of midsoles. A pair of full-length rubber midsoles were then ‘Blake-stitched’ into place (i.e. stitched directly into the footbeds) to ensure a far more durable connection with the footbeds as compared with the glue alone, which tends to break down and fail after a while. With the midsoles in place, we then proceeded to install a pair of Goodyear Waterwalker outer soles with integrated heel blocks. We chose these soles for their durability, comfort and compatibility with the style and profile of these particular RM Williams boots.
While we ordinarily use original RM Williams parts in our repairs, the original soles are not available for repair purposes. The new soles we used here are of course similar, rather than identical, to the original soles, but they were custom made to perfectly fit the uppers and the installation of midsoles not only ensured a superior construction but also enables much easier and more economical resoles of the boots going forward.
Leather polishing
We finished off the work by polishing the leather uppers with a pigmented leather cream and wax, allowing us to restore some of the missing colour, buff out the scuffing as much as possible, and get the leather uppers looking much fresher.
