The boots
These R.M. Williams Chincilla boots were fairly new and in great shape, but the leather soles remained prone to significant wear, particularly at the toes. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we installed a pair of flush-mounted, brass Triumph toe plates.
Toe plates
We began by carefully cutting into the leather at the toe of soles to create a depression into which we were then able to carefully screw into place a pair of brass toe plates. With the toe plates in place, we carefully ground down the edges of the plates to match the shape of the soles.
The toe plates we used in this case are German-made, Triumph plates made from brass — their trapezoidal shape makes them suitable for use on footwear with narrower toes and their composition makes them ideal in protecting leather soles at the toes, where they otherwise tend to wear down the fastest.
While toe plates are not always flush-mounted, we did so in accordance with the customer’s instructions in this case — while this is more expensive, it helps to ensure the toe plates do not affect the profile of the boots or make too much noise as the boots hit the ground. Flush mounting toe plates involves cutting into the original leather soles. This is fairly delicate work that needs to be done by hand. And while most toe plates can be made to fit the leather soles on which they are installed, we are always careful to avoid cutting into the stitching on the leather soles — in some cases, this limits the degree to which the toe plates can sit perfectly flush with the leather soles.
