The shoes
These Valentino Rockstud pumps were holding up reasonably well despite having been worn on several occasions, but the heels were worn and had suffered a few scratches and leather soles were starting to show signs of wear. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis / quote, we offered to replace the heel tips and repair the heel blocks as well as install a pair of thin rubber sole protectors for improved longevity and traction.
Heel block repair
Heel blocks on pumps like these often gather gnarly scars due to the occasional accident (hitting gaps in pavement or walking in grass, etc). Generally speaking, we offer 2 solutions in these cases:
We can repair the heel blocks by glueing down any loose leather, filling any gaps and touching up any discolouration.
We can re-cover the heel blocks with entirely new leather in a matching or similar colour.
The first option is generally preferred wherever it is possible, being a cost-effective option and one that does not otherwise affect the original finish of the shoes. In this case, the heel blocks had only minor damage, with small scratches on the surface. So we were able to repair them in a fairly straightforward way — glueing down the loose leather and then touching up the gaps.
Heel tip replacement
We removed the worn heel tips, pulling them off the old heel blocks. We then inserted a brand new pair of hard-wearing, Italian-made heel tips in a matching size and colour.
Sole protector installation
We started off by carefully smoothing out the worn leather soles, re-contouring them to create a depressed ‘bed’ into which we then installed a new pair of thin rubber sole protectors without affecting the shoes’ original silhouette. These rubber sole protectors are made of a highly durable rubber compound that protects the original leather soles (and therefore the body of the shoes) from wear and also comes with a light tread that improves traction (especially in wet weather).
