The shoes
The heels on these Salvatore Ferragamo Double Bow Pump Shoes were heavily damaged after a run in with an escalator, and the unprotected leather soles were showing signs of significant wear. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to re-cover the heel blocks with new leather and install a pair of premium rubber sole protectors.
Heel block re-covering
We began by peeling back the insoles around the back of the shoes in order to safely remove the heel blocks. With the heel blocks removed, we used a specialist solvent to remove the old leather in a single piece. We used this piece of leather as a reference in cutting to shape a new piece of premium leather. We then re-wrapped the heel blocks with these new leather pieces and re-attached the heel blocks to the uppers before re-adhering the insoles into place.
The leather with which we re-wrapped the heel blocks was similar to the existing, but not identical in terms of colour — it’s generally difficult, and sometimes impossible, to perfectly match leathers in terms of colour and texture. So what we proceeded to do here is custom mix a colour based on the colour of the leather around the rest of the shoes and used that to recolour / refinish the new leather around the heel blocks.
Protective sole installation
We began by sanding down the front half of the leather soles, to create a narrow depression into which the new protective rubber soles could be installed and sit flush with the rest of the original leather soles further back — and so avoid affecting the silhouette or balance of the shoes. We used a pair of Casali sole protectors in this case — these are made in a glossy finish and a nude colour that blends in well with the original leather soles.
