The boots
The burnishing around the toes and the back of these RM Williams Chinchilla boots had faded due to an unfortunate mishap with a leather conditioner. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we restored the uppers by stripping back the colour and then re-dyeing, re-burnishing and re-polishing the leather.
Redye and burnish
We began by cleaning the leather and carefully stripping the leather of its original colour, to prepare for a fresh application of dye. This also ensures that the new dye is absorbed properly and evenly across the surface. We then applied the dye to the leather in several thin layers to achieve the desired shade of brown.
With the leather dyed, we then used a series of leather creams and wax polishes to restore the leather’s original lustre and burnishing around the toes and the back of the boots.
Heel counter relining
The lining around the back of the boots (what we generally refer to as the ‘heel counters’) was worn through and torn, leaving the back of the boots prone to collapsing and the seams there at risk of splitting open with continued wear.
We repaired this lining by relining the back of each boot with new leather, which we securely adhered and stitched into place.
While replacement of the original lining around the back of the boots is possible, this requires a full reconstruction of the boots — including replacement of the soles, heels and the welts (which connect the outer soles to the uppers). The repair method we used here offers are significantly more straightforward and economical solution, particularly when the boots are otherwise in good condition.
