SoleHeeled offers convenient and affordable Dr Martens boot repairs by Australia’s best craftsmen, with free shipping to your door. This case study outlines how we recently repaired a customer’s Dr Martens boots.
The boots
These Dr Martens boots were essentially unwearable, with the outer soles worn down and the midsoles coming apart from the uppers. When the customer reached out to us for a free diagnosis/quote, we offered to repair the midsoles and perform a full resole, replacing the soles along the entire length of each boot.
Full resole
Dr Martins boots are designed with a heat-fused construction, where the outer soles are permanently welded to the midsoles. Because of this construction, Dr Martens boots are more complicated than ‘welted’ shoes to resole, particularly when the midsoles are damaged, as they were in this case.
We began by removing the worn outer soles. While we are able to replace the midsoles on Dr Martens boots, the yellow cosmetic stitching can’t be replicated, so we generally avoid doing so unless completely necessary. Instead, we repaired the midsoles and then installed a new pair of durable rubber soles over the top.
Midsole repair
The midsoles on these boots were severely damaged, with a large crack around the back of the right boot that left much of the stitching there damaged beyond repair. We began by removing the damaged rubber, and then sealing up the cracks as cleanly as possible. After this, we re-adhered the midsoles back into place against the uppers.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to achieve an entirely seamless finish due to the extend of the damage, but this work ensured the midsoles (and soles) were secure, and that the boots could continue to be worn.
